"The Cuban Assassin" Fidel Sierra, the
current Cuban Heavyweight Champion, has been wrestling for over
25 years, and is still going strong. He
speaks Spanish fluently, and is a lot more than just
an accomplished wrestler. He has a great
mind for the business.
He has wrestled
for all of the major companies, including
WWE, WCW, ECW, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, NWA
Florida Championship Wrestling, and the Pacific
Northwest, and has traveled all over the United
States, Europe, Australia, India, and the
Caribbean.
He actually broke into the
business when there were still territories and
it took more than just a pair of wrestling boots
to get in the ring. He worked hard, and made
many sacrifices during his career, along with
making his mark in many territories. His
championship title reigns are too numerous to
mention, but here are a few major
ones:
Pacific Northwest Heavyweight
Champion
Pacific Northwest Tag Team
Champion
North American Champion for Stampede
Wrestling in Canada
Australia Southern
Hemisphere Champion
AWA World Champion (won
it for Curt Hennig, since he had a hurt
neck)
WWC Puerto Rican Heavyweight
Champion
WWC Puerto Rican Tag Team
Champion
NWA Southern Heavyweight
Champion
NWA Florida Heavyweight
Champion
NWA Florida Tag Team Champions with
Ricky Santana
NWA World Tag Team
Champions
Plus many, many, many
more
Besides holding many titles, he has
wrestled all the greats, from Hulk Hogan to Ric
Flair (to a one hour draw for the world title in
Oregon), to the late Curt Hennig, The Rock,
"Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Grappler and many
more. He teamed up with the late Andre the Giant
in Japan, and also wrestled the legendary
Antonio Anoki there. He sold out Caguas, Puerto
Rico, every week for two months straight, during
his feud against the legendary Carlos
Colon. And the list goes on and on.
He booked Australia in 1985, and was
assistant booker in Portland, Oregon when Rip
Oliver and then The Grappler were bookers.
This was when the Pacific Northwest
Territory was really hot.
Not only has
Fidel made a name for himself, but he has made a
mark under several different names, again just
to name a few, Top Gun, The Assassin, The Saint,
David Patterson, and a few others. In fact there
is enough material there for a book, but since
this is only a website bio, we will not go into
all the details and only mention a few of his
accomplishments. Fidel has also helped many a
guys to break into the business. Some who
appreciated it and some who have not.
When given a chance by Jimmy Hart on
WCW, he drew a 2.2 rating against Hacksaw Jim
Duggan on a Saturday show, but since that made
the powers in charge of Monday Nitro look bad,
that was cut off. Makes you wonder, you would
think that if you draw a good rating, that they
would like that. But that is the politics
of the business and that may be one of the
reasons WCW is no longer in business. Too much
politics, not enough business.
To this
day The Cuban Assassin is very
successful and keeps busy. Maybe it is his
hard work, or natural gimmick that always gets
the crowd going, along with his manager Fantasy,
or his love for the business that is reflected
in everything he does. Or maybe, well maybe it
is the entire package. Bottom line is that he
always delivers, and maybe it is time that
people realize that he is not just a great
wrestler with lots of experience who also
happens to be in the best shape of his life, but
also has a great mind for this business and is
one of the most underrated and under estimated
greats in this business we call professional
wrestling.
